New US Dietary Guidelines 2020-2025

The new Dietary Guidelines were released yesterday for 2020-2025. This edition is the first to provide recommendations by life stage, from birth through older age. They’ve been issued every five years since 1980.

Here’s a summary of the updates to the Dietary Guidelines for Americans.

There are four main guidelines.

1) Follow a healthy dietary pattern at every life stage.

2) Customize and enjoy nutrient-dense food and drink choices to reflect personal preferences, cultural traditions, and budgetary considerations.

3) Focus on meeting food group needs with nutrient-dense foods and drinks. Stay within calorie limits.

4) Limit foods and drinks higher in added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium. Limit alcoholic drinks.
